It truly feels as if Externship flew by. This month honestly has been a great experience. Not only did I refresh my memory on what I did last year, but I also learned many more things this year.
I have always told myself that I want a profession related to criminal law, but I discovered why. Criminal law can fall into different categories; from helping families, to investigating crime, to arresting people, etc. I figured out that I am interested in criminal law because I want to help people/families with problems that they can't stand up on for their own. I am glad that I had the opportunity to work with the attorney, Ray estolano, and his paralegal, Gilbert. I learned so much from them, and I truly appreciate them taking their time, and teaching us what rights we have, and what a person can do in certain cases. I once again would like to appreciate them because I know that out in the real world I might experience certain problems, and thanks to the knowledge that I gained in the office, I won’t feel lost in an case of a legal emergency. Also, I am thankful that I had Maria and Miranda, our office secretary, because they helped me a lot too. Whether I needed help looking for a file, searching up a case, or answering calls; they were always there when either Jerry and I needed them. Overall, I would to thank every worker at the office, as well as Gerardo because he helped me out a lot, and he made a good partner. Thanks to everyone for having us and helping us through this Externship journey! During externship I learned many things, but for the most part I was just scanning papers. Scanning was definitely something I didn't know how to do, but this year I was able to learn. The process of scanning is basically, placing papers inside the scanner, and the papers will pop up in the PC. After wards,, a CD is placed inside and we drag the file to the CD. Finally, the CD read the file and is ready to eject, once that is done, we place the CD in a pocket and staple it to the original file.
Every kid has their own high school experience, and every kid learns from their experience. As a transferred student, I thought that HTHI, would be similar to the school I used to attend freshman, and sophmore year. However, I was truly wrong! During these two years at HTHI, I have gained many skills, and one of them is communicating! HTH is a project based learning school, and during my years at HTH I was able to work with other students, talk to teachers on the daily, and I was I got the opportunity to greet people I didn’t know, once in a while. Personally, I think that having the skill of communication is very important in this world. It is the skill that connects you with people, It is the skill that helps you gain new friends. At my externship, we are able to answer the office calls, and part of it, is greeting people, and making them feel comfortable. I am truly glad that during high school I’ve gained this skill because it truly does help anywhere I go! However, unlike school, at externship, my partner and I are usually doing our own thing, although, when we need help with a file, we definitely do ask our mentor, or other co-workers. Also, as mentioned before we do answer calls in the office so it is important to communicate, and let our co-workers know who called and why they called. But so far, things are more differently, simply because we work on our own!
Being my second week here at Externship, not only have I learned how to scan, but I have also learned many concepts related to a divorce, and an immigration process. At first, writing, and reading these concepts was overwhelming, because I had no idea what they meant, or what they were. However, after reading, and looking up what these new words are, reading a sentence with law terms can become understandable afterwards! Thankfully, my mentor is able to give my partner and I books, in which we can also view the meaning of these new words. Other than learning new concepts, translating documents has also been a challenge for me. Although I am bilingual, I still have trouble translating words from english to spanish/ from spanish to english. As a spanish speaker I know words that are used in an everyday conversation, but they’re terms of course that I don’t know their meaning to. My partner Gerardo has helped me to translate words from using the internet. Some words can appear in the internet, but dont make sense in the sentence that is being used, so he taught me to be careful whenever I am looking for a word. Otherwise, many duties at the office are very simple, from printing out papers, to scanning, to answering our clients phone calls, It has been great so far!
Externship season can feel overwhelming to many students, yet for others it is an exciting time of the year. As a junior in high school I did my Internship at a law office located in Chula vista. Honestly I was very overwhelmed because I did not know what to expect, or who I was going to be working with. However, at the end of Internship I feel like I had learned a lot more than I was supposed to. Yes, I made mistakes during my Internship, but I’m thankful for that otherwise I would not have gained the skills that I have now. Since I really enjoyed the atmosphere and working with my internship co-workers, I decided to apply at the same externship this year again! I truly am excited that I have the opportunity to work with the same people as I worked with last year. I am also excited to learn new things, and gain new skills. I know that even though it is the same place, I know for a fact that it will be a new experience! So far I know that it has only been 3 days since externship started, but I am already learning new things. For example, something I didn’t know last year was how to scan papers. This year I am gaining the knowledge of how to scan. I feel like even though scanning doesn’t seem like a big skill, it is definitely helpful, especially in the real world. Also, It is nice having a classmate work in the same place as me, I can learn from him and he can learn from me, which is pretty nice. Hopefully this month at externship is a great one, I am excited for all the new things that this experience will bring me! |
